A friend of John Schuler's, who is a pastor and travels extensively around the world, recently sent John a very inspiring email. His email, along with a photo of the shoes he travels in, highlights an impressive list of stops and challenges along his way. "Let's Make Excellent Happen" is the official tagline for New Balance. It seems very fitting to pair that slogan with Pastor Bill's email, as it appears that Pastor Bill is doing just that...in his New Balance shoes. Do you make excellent happen in your New Balance shoes? If so, we would love to hear about it.

Preparing for Winter Running
by Brian Nelson
Running in the winter can be a great deal of fun, but you need to pay more attention to your surroundings in order to avoid injury. Here are a few recommendations about how to run safely in the winter months:
-Stable footing is the goal: Run on the street (safe from traffic) and sidewalks that are plowed.
-Don't overdo: Slow your pace and increase your cadence (faster leg turnover).
-Run with a partner. This helps you stay motiv ...

<trackback:ping>http://nbtc.schulershoes.com/DesktopModules/SunBlog/Views/Handlers/Trackback.ashx?id=26</trackback:ping>

Realistic Goals are the Key to Success in 2012

Happy New Year! What a wonderful time to start fresh and set goals for a better year and a better you. For the most part, I think we are always working towards a “better you”, but the New Year always seems to kick up the urge to strive toward an even better, “better you”.

So, resolutions have been set. Some have probably already been broken, but hey, that’s life. Get back up on the horse and get going again. I used to set myself up for failure by making lifestyle changes that were pretty much a shock to my system and I would just give up. I have learned that gradual change and realistic goals help me to be more successful.

So, when Kyle Ochsner, a Strength Coach Catalyst from Larsen Sports Medicine and Catalyst sent over tips for starting and sticking to a successful exercise routine for the New Year, his advice really hit home. I hope it helps you if you are starting or continuing on with your own exercise program

With an increase in childhood obesity, we know as adult role models (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles) how important it is too keep our kids eating healthy and on the move. It is really fun not only hearing about adults making a difference in the lives of children, but also finding out how they are doing it.
I recently heard that my friend and fellow runner Jami Stromberg started an after school running club for 5th graders at Earle Brown Elementary, where her children attend school. I asked Jami how she had time to get a group like this organized. She said that she called up the Principal and asked him if she could start a running group and he said yes. Well, that was easy enough. She said in the beginning she was going to limit the group to only 8 students. Due to its popularity, she now has 24 kids in the program and 3 teachers and 1 parent who volunteer to help coach. The group meets once a week. They do a warm up, stretch, go for a run (about ...

<trackback:ping>http://nbtc.schulershoes.com/DesktopModules/SunBlog/Views/Handlers/Trackback.ashx?id=21</trackback:ping>

Healthy Food Suggestions for Kids on the Move

As a shoe store that carries athletic and performance shoes for Men, Women and Children (Schuler Shoes/New Balance Twin Cities), we love to see parents and kids on the move. Families seeking adventure together = less time in front of the TV and more time staying active.

With a rise in childhood obesity, it is clear that we need our kids to stay active in school and community sports and well, just getting out and moving around more. But, this is just one piece of the puzzle. An even bigger piece to all of this is teaching our children and even re-teaching our teenagers healthy eating habits and exposing them to healthy food options.

For ideas on what kind of foods to include in our kids' daily routines, I asked my friend and Nutrition and Wellness Coach Liz Blom a few questions.

What would you suggest packing in lunches?
Packed lunches…early in the morning it can seem like such a burden to pack lunches and there are so many mornings that I wish my kids would just take hot lunch.&nbsp ...

<trackback:ping>http://nbtc.schulershoes.com/DesktopModules/SunBlog/Views/Handlers/Trackback.ashx?id=20</trackback:ping>

Running Injuries and Injury Prevention

I usually run outside all year long, but summer is truly my favorite time for outdoor workouts. In Minnesota especially, we like to get out and enjoy what we can of the warm weather and sun. Running Injuries & Injury Prevention

Foot Types and Proper Performance Footwear
by Board Certified Pedorthist Lance Vidger
For those of you new to running there are a few key things you should know about finding the right shoe. New Balance, (as well as other running shoe companies) have one main goal when designing running shoes – to control the amount of arch flex in the shoe. Traditionally the idea is the flatter your foot (your arch), the more the shoe will need to control the flex.

During the first part of June, Schuler Shoes/New Balance Twin Cities will be hosting Susan G. This is a great time for 3-Day participants to meet and talk with others who have the same goal not only in mind, but in their hearts.
